"I am most concerned at the re-imposition of the Public Emergency Decree, and also at recently reported statements by the Military Council in Fiji that neither Mr Laisenia Qarase, nor the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) political party will be allowed to contest the next elections. The people of Fiji Islands have the right to select freely the leaders and government of their choice. This is a basic tenet of democracy and one of the fundamental values of the Commonwealth," said Mr McKinnon in a statement on 7 September 2007.
